Why Your Skin Gets Drier in Fall (and How to Fix It)

Your skin gets drier in the fall because of changes in weather, humidity, and habits — all of which weaken your skin’s moisture barrier.

  1. Lower Humidity
    • When humidity drops, water in your skin evaporates faster — leading to dryness and tightness.
  2. Indoor Heating
    • Central heat makes indoor air warm but very dry. This constant dry air pulls moisture from your skin.
  3. Hot Showers
    • A cozy long shower feels great, but hot water strips natural oils that help keep moisture in.
  4. Weakened Skin Barrier
    • As humidity falls and dryness increases, your barrier becomes less effective at holding water in.
  5. Lifestyle Shifts
    • Less sweat → fewer natural oils being produced.
    • Less sunlight → slower skin turnover, leading to buildup and dullness.

How to Fix It

  1. Switch to a Moisturizing Cleanser
    • Avoid foaming or stripping washes.
  2. Moisturize Immediately After Showering
    • Apply lotion or cream while skin is still slightly damp to trap in moisture.
  3. Add a Humidifier Indoors
    • Helps restore moisture and reduce overnight dehydration.
  4. Exfoliate Gently (1–2x/week)
    • Removes flaky buildup so moisturizers absorb better — but don’t overdo it!
  5. Use a Moisturizer at Night
    • Look for formulas with fatty acids to strengthen the skin barrier.
  6. Stay Hydrated
    • Drink water throughout the day
